VS 2008 InstallFest Trail Upgrade

Posted by: Danilo A. Diaz, Jr |

As everyone who attended the VS2008 InstallFest knows, the DVDs that you received were 90 days trail version of the RTM bits. The DVD sleeves had a unique number that allowed you to register to receive a full copy of the product. By now you should have received the full version by mail. Incase you where wondering how to removed the 90 days limitation without reinstalling it, here is how you do it (from Bry http://voidimpossible.com/):

Add-remove programs from control panel -> click remove VS2008 -> window pops up and one of the options is to enter the cd key (the one you got in the mail) to upgrade to the full version.  You don't have to reinstall.

Thanks Bry for pointing this out.

My friend and partner in crime (DE from Boston) Chris Bowen just got published for the second time I think. Chris is an awesome guy and pretty smart as well. If you are looking for a book on WCF be sure to check out his book. I have not had the chance to read it yet but it is on my list.

Congrats Chris on this great accomplishment and thanks A LOT for raising the bar.

I did a Visual Studio Tips and Tricks talk tonight at the Philly.Net user group. I showed some of the new enhancements in C# 3.0 as well some nice tricks in the IDE itself. I promised the group that I would provide them with a list of the key biddings I used during my talk. I am going to up that and provide all the key biddings for C# and VB.

The Association of Information Technology Professionals and De Sales University welcome Microsoft to the next Lehigh Valley chapter meeting.
Please join us for a half-day introduction to key technologies that will drive the next generation of the Internet. See how new business applications will be created by combining rich software applications with rich Internet services. Microsoft calls this evolutionary step, Software + Services.

AGENDA:

1:1 – 2:15pm - Building Rich Internet Applications with Silverlight Microsoft ® Silverlight™ is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of .NET based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web.

2:15 – 3:15pm - Windows Live Platform This session provides a comprehensive look at the Windows Live collection of services, capabilities, software, and APIs, etc., as well as examples of how the various services can be incorporated into solutions.

3:30 – 4:30pm - How Does Design Impact Architecture For the past few years Architecture in the IT industry has largely focused on data centers. While it is important to get these operational items right, none of them have ever closed a deal, made an important business decision, or created a new market. As these IT architectures mature, it is time to return the focus of architecture to where it can have the biggest impact and greatest value for the business: the user.

3:30 – 4:30pm - How Does Design Impact Architecture
Attendees will get a hands-on chance to explore Microsoft Popfly, a new mashup that will help ground all of the early sessions.

7:15 – 8:15pm – Microsoft Keynote: Software + Services The future business application landscape is a combination of local software and Internet services interacting with one another. Software makes services better and services make software better. And by bringing together the best of both worlds, we maximize choice, flexibility and capabilities for our customers.

5 People that Influenced My Career

Posted by: Danilo A. Diaz, Jr |

Andy has an interest post about people who have influenced his career. Andy and I have been talking about this recently so I had an opportunity to think about the folks that have been key in my professional life.

Here is my list in no particular order:

Marlon Lucero / Friend / General Manager, SQL Integrators

My first full time job was working for a small nonprofit organization in Philadelphia. I was the systems "tech guy" administrator. Though I really loved my job, my passion was in development, which I did not get to do much of. Marlon was a vendor who saw my talent and helped me find my first development job. Marlon has been a great advisor for me in the last 7 years.

Mitch Ruebush / Friend / Chief Architect, ING Direct, USA

The best thing I learned from Mitch was how to debugged code and how to find the answer to technical problems. I owe a lot of what I know to him. He is humble and smart. Great combination.

Nic Coviello / High School Teacher

One of the best things someone said to me was "why be a technician when you can be the engineer". This summarizes the influence that Mr. C had in my live. He was the first person to believe in me. He pushed me to be the best that I could be. I attended a vocational high school where as a non native speaker I did not get the proper level of English education to get me to college level upon graduation. Because of this my English SAT scores were not that high (big surprise :-)) . A school counselor told me that maybe I was not "college material". To make a long story short, the quote from Mr. C came the day I told him about my conversation with the "counselor". Oh and by the way the "counselor" did not last long after that.

Rev. Danny Cortes / Rev. Luis Cortes
former pastors and former bosses
SVP, Esperanza USA / President, Esperanza USA

I learned a lot from these two guys. Mainly about community service. They also helped me find my voice and for a young Latino living in an area where the expectation was for us to end up dead or locked up by 20, this was a big thing.

Jeff Chapman /former boss / VP Technology, ING DIRECT, USA

It's all a political game. That's what I learned from Jeff. I did not always agreed with Jeff but the man is a genius when it comes to work place politics.

There were also many "jerks" that influenced my career. So by taking lemons and making lemonade, these "jerks" mainly taught me how "NOT" to treat people. So if you worked with me and did not make it to the list above you know how I feel about you. :-). Just kidding...I have worked with many great people.
